The question that comes to mind most often when we find graffiti seems to be why someone made that particular mark, but it’s also interesting to think about how they made it. What tool might they have used and where could they have got it from? And does that tell us anything about them or their graffiti? How difficult was it to make the mark?
As a craftsman, so familiar with thinking about tools and materials, Sean has found himself intrigued by these questions and has been experimenting with making marks in stone, wood and lead – the fabric of our churches. This has answered some of our questions and posed others – and is all food for thought.
